Reign of Louis XIV

Louis came to full power after the death of Cardinal Mazarin in 1661. Louis was 22 an determined to ruler France himself.

As king of France one of the first things Louis did was increase France's economic power. Louis did this by first appointing Jean Baptiste Colbert. Colbert was Louis Minister of Finance, and he believed that France needed to be self suficient and provide for itself. To do this Colbert gave funds to French companies, put a high tariff on foreign imports, and encouraged migration to the French colonie Canada. Louis also was against protestants, and it eventually hurt France.

Effects of Colberts Death on the Economy

Not long after Jean Colbert died, Louis canceled the Edict of Nantes in 1685. When this happend many Huguenot artisans and business owners fled France, which inturn hurt France economically by robbing it of many skilled workers.

Controlling the Nobles

Louis used many methods to control the nobles, and control how much power they had. One of These methods was having the nobles at the palace. This method helped Louis keep control of the nobles in two ways.

  1. It made the nobles have to depend on Louis
  2. It also kept the nobles from their homes which gave more power to the kings intendants

Another method Louis used was to employ merchants and church leaders with the power to run government affairs because he knew these were the people who had the most loyalty to him.

Increasing the Interest in the Arts

Not since Augustus of Rome had there been a european king who supported the arts as much as Louis XIV. Louis increased the popularity of opera and ballet, and even dance in The Sun King ballet.

The difference with Louis and other patrons of the arts was that Louis used art no longer to glorify God, but to glorify the king and his rule.
